President's Message

It is with great honour and humility that I write to inform you that I have officially assumed the office of President of the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology and GI Endoscopy (PSG), effective 23rd April 2025.

At this pivotal moment, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the past presidents, core committee members, and contributors who have dedicated themselves over the past four decades to shaping PSG into a respected, credible, and ever-evolving platform. Your vision, dedication, and tireless service have laid the foundation upon which we continue to grow. I would also like to congratulate the newly elected office bearers and members of the executive committee.

PSG is not only the main but also the oldest society, established almost 42 years ago. It is also the most organized society of gastroenterology and liver disease experts of Pakistan, having representatives from all over the country, ensuring near-equal opportunities to all provinces and chapters.

As I take on this responsibility, my vision for the society over the next two years is rooted in progress, integrity, and collaboration.

- To provide world-class training and service locally, nurturing a new generation of gastroenterologists who are equipped with cutting-edge clinical skills, grounded in ethical practice, and committed to delivering excellence in patient care throughout the country. -To revamp our digital presence, including the PSG website (https://www.psgpak.org), making it a more informative, interactive, and dynamic platform for members, trainees, and the wider medical community. - To reconnect our members with the original constitution of PSG—available on our website—written at the society’s inception and still highly relevant in today’s era. Now more than ever, we must unite under one umbrella while encouraging academic growth within each subspecialty. I do, however, strongly believe that Pakistan should have one unified GI society and one liver society, to maximise impact and collaboration nationally. - I congratulate our editorial team on the successful relaunch of the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology Journal. I would like to see the creation of subsections within the journal, with responsibilities delegated to society members who will be expected to report on their progress at the annual conference. This is key to fostering both accountability and academic engagement. - To expand our membership base, with a nominal fee, and I encourage all current members to invite colleagues to join and become active participants in our shared mission. - To strengthen international collaborations, particularly with friends and societies in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, America, Australia, and beyond. There is so much we can offer one another—our disease patterns differ, and so do our experiences. Mutual learning will only enhance training and service provision in Pakistan. - To address pressing concerns faced by our trainees and trainers. I will actively liaise with the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) to ensure voices are heard and acted upon. It is vital that we work to standardise and streamline training pathways. I recognise the confusion and challenges caused by recent changes to the fellowship structure, and I commit to advocating for clarity, consistency, and fairness in this process. - To reform our relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. I will lead the development of a transparent, ethical policy that all gastroenterologists in Pakistan will be expected to follow. Our goal is to reassure the public that our decisions are based on patient welfare—not financial incentives. We must hold ourselves to a higher standard, with integrity at the core of our clinical practice. - To build stronger regional alliances, particularly with societies in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, and other neighbouring countries. I envision the creation of a SARC-style GI conference, offering a platform for regional knowledge exchange, collaboration, and professional camaraderie. Lastly, I extend a warm and open invitation to all members to reach out with your feedback, ideas, and suggestions. This journey can only succeed with your active involvement and support. Together, let us strengthen the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology and GI Endoscopy—and shape the future of GI care in our country.
